The General Assembly will meet this afternoon to hear the remaining nine speakers in the debate of item 164, Causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa (A/52/871). It will also consider an additional report of the Committee on Conferences, which would enable the Committee on Information to meet during the main part of the 53rd session of the General Assembly.
All six main committees are meeting this morning. The First Committee heard an address by the Secretary-General and then opened its general debate with eight speakers inscribed for this morning. This afternoon, the Special Political and Decolonization Committee is continuing its general debate on all decolonization matters. The Second Committee held this morning a panel discussion on the State of World Economy, before resuming consideration of macroeconomic policy questions. The Third Committee continued this morning the general discussion of crime prevention and criminal justice and of international drug control. The Fifth Committee began this morning with the consideration of the first report of ACABQ on its activities during the 52nd session, and took action on two draft resolutions regarding cost savings in UNCTAD resulting from restructuring of intergovernmental machinery and the redorm of the Secretariat, and the arrangements for the International Trade Centre. The Sixth Committee completed its Bureau with election of two Vice-Chairmen (Lesotho and the Netherlands) and a Rapporteur (Lithuania) and then proceeded with the consideration of the report of the International Law Commission.
