On Tuesday, 14 October 1997, the General Assembly elected Bahrain, Brazil, Gabon, the Gambia and Slovenia members of the Security Council for a two-year term of office beginning on 1 January 1998.
On Thursday, 30 October 1997, the General Assembly elected Algeria, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, the Comoros, India, Italy, Lesotho, Mauritius, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Poland, Sierra Leone, the United States of America and Vietnam members of the Economic and Social Council for a three-year term of office beginning on 1 January 1998.
On Wednesday, 5 November 1997, the General Assembly elected Saint Lucia a member of the Economic and Social Council for a three-year term of office beginning on 1 January 1998.
