UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATION (UNESCO)
The UNESCO General Conference in
1995 designated youth as one of the four priority groups for its action.
Efforts have been intensified, first, to gain a deeper understanding of
the problems affecting the lives, behaviour and aspirations of young people
and, secondly, to involve them more directly in UNESCO's programmes and
actions. The activities for youth contained in the subprogramme on young
people and social development form the core of the programme. The dialogue
and partnership with youth organizations were made through the World Collective
Consultation (Tokyo, Japan, 1995) and the Regional Consultations in Asia-Pacific
(Hanoi, Viet Nam, 1996) and in Africa (Lomé, Togo, 1996), to ensure
that the deliberations result in concrete projects to be implemented with
youth participation in various areas, such as literacy and basic education;
preservation of cultural heritage; and environment, cultural and sports
activities.
