FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS (FAO)
FAO's mission relating to youth
is to assist member countries worldwide to strengthen and expand programmes
for rural young people where such programmes exist, and to help establish
new ones where they do not. These are generally non-formal education programmes
for out-of-school rural youth that play an important role in building the
life skills of individual young people, strengthening families and communities,
and working towards sustainable agricultural and rural development that
will be a major contributor to the overall progress of a country. In the
light of the 1996 World Food Summit in Rome, FAO is beginning a new initiative
to mobilize young people in support of the Rome Declaration for Food Security,
which will contribute to the goal of reducing the number of food-insecure
people to 400 million by the year 2015.
