UNITED NATIONS CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL CRIME PREVENTION (CICP)
Since the early days of the United
Nations, the issues of crime prevention and criminal justice have been
of great concern to the Organization, and have resulted in the creation
of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which is the
principal policy-making and coordinating body of the United Nations in
crime prevention and criminal justice, including juvenile justice. The
Commission is serviced by the United Nations Centre for International Crime
Prevention, the former Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Division,
which also provides legal advice and assists Member States in programmes
to prevent juvenile delinquency and in the reform of juvenile justice systems.
The Centre provides technical assistance to Member States to implement
fully the rights of children and youth in conflict with the law, as guaranteed
by the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international juvenile
justice instruments, namely the UN Guidelines for the Prevention of Juvenile
Delinquency (The Riyadh Guidelines), the UN Standard Minimum Rules for
the Administration of Juvenile Justice (The Beijing Rules) and the UN Rules
for the Protection of Juveniles Deprived of their Liberty.
