ITINERARY OF SECRETARY-GENERAL KOFI ANNAN IN SOUTH AFRICA, 1 - 4 SEPTEMBER

 

United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, will arrive in Johannesburg on Sunday, 1 September, to attend the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

On Sunday morning the Secretary-General and Nane Annan will travel to the Sterkfontein Caves, where they will join President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa and other dignitaries at the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, near Krugersdorp. This event is scheduled to take place at 12:30 p.m. Copies of the Secretary-General's remarks are available under embargo until delivery at the documents counter in the Media Centre in the Sandton Convention Centre. Later in the afternoon, from 3:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m., the Secretary-General will attend the Business Day event organized by Business Action for Sustainable Development at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton. At this event, the Secretary-General will make a short statement and this is available under embargo to media at the SCC Media Centre. The Secretary-General will later hold a private meeting with those heads of United Nations agencies, funds and programmes who are present at the Summit.

On Monday morning the Secretary-General and Mrs. Annan, along with President Mbeki and Zanele Mbeki, will greet heads of State and government arriving at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in the Sandton Convention Centre, starting at 7:30 a.m. At 8:50 a.m. they will proceed into the Plenary Hall to open the high-level segment of the Summit at 9 a.m. Copies of the Secretary-General's statement to the Summit are available under embargo in the Media Centre.

The order of speakers for the opening of the high-level segment is as follows: statement by President Mbeki; statement of the Secretary-General; statements by children; statement by the President of the General Assembly; statements by heads of State and government according to the speakers' list.

At 12:30 p.m. the Secretary-General will open a round table on "Mobilizing Investment: The Least Developed Countries" to be held in Committee Room 5. Further details about this event are available from Gavin Power of the Global Compact, tel: 1-917-622-7641.

Later in the day, the Secretary-General and Mrs. Annan will travel to the Civil Society Forum at NASREC where, at 3 p.m., he will address the Forum. Further details about media arrangements at the Forum are available from Mr. Muzi Khumalo of the Forum, tel: 072-255-9071.

The Secretary-General and Mrs. Annan will then travel to Soweto where they will meet children from the Children's Earth Summit with Jane Goodall, United Nations Messenger of Peace and member of the Secretary-General's Advisory Panel
for the Summit. The Secretary-General will plant a tree on Somoho, a hill made from a former garbage dump. He will also receive a memorandum from the Children's Summit and be entertained by the performance of a gumboot dance.

In the evening, starting at 7:30 p.m., the Secretary-General and Mrs. Annan will be guests of the President of South Africa at a dinner in honour of the heads of State and government at the Sandton Hotel. The Secretary-General will reply to the toast by the President of South Africa.

On Tuesday, 3 September, the Secretary-General will spend most of his day in a series of bilateral meetings with heads of State and government attending the Summit. As time permits, he will also participate in the round table discussions with heads of State, and major group and government representatives.

At 6 p.m. he will address a special high-level round table on the future of multilateralism with President Thabo Mbeki, President Vicente Fox Qyesada of Mexico, James Wolfensohn, President of the World Bank, Supachai Panitchpakdi, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, and other participants.

On Wednesday 4 September, the Secretary-General will hold a press conference at noon in the press conference room in the Media Centre (Exhibition 2) at the Sandton Convention Centre. This is open to all members of the media accredited to the Summit.

Later in the day the Secretary-General and Mrs. Annan will tape a segment of the children's television programme "Sesame Street", in which they will introduce an HIV-positive muppet.

On Wednesday evening, the Secretary-General and Mrs. Annan will leave Johannesburg for Paris.
