UN Information Centers Activities

  • Armenia
    Commemoration event of the International Women's Day within the framework of the UN Secretary-General's Campaign: “UNite to end Violence against Women”. A joint UNO/ UNFPA event with participation of police and justice officials, civil society members, youth groups and mass media. Armenian version of the HQ poster will be published, backgrounder and SG message will be translated (Yerevan, 10 March).
  • Azerbaijan
    UNIO Baku, in close partnership with the Azerbaijani State Committee on Family, Women and Children’s Affairs and the National NGO Forum, will organize a roundtable, in accordance with the campaign “Unite to End Violence against Women”. It will bring together representatives of Government, the NGO community, various UN Agencies and media to highlight the issue of violence against women and the goals of the SG campaign along with in-depth discussion on current endeavours and possible actions in the future (Guba region, 5 March)
  • Bahrain
    At the initiative of UNIC, UNCT in Bahrain will launch the Secretary-General’s campaign “Unite to End Violence Against Women” (2008-2015) with concrete projects and programmes involving women & men in association with the Supreme Council for Women, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Ministry of Information & Culture, the National Women’s Union, NGOs, The General Organization for Youth and Sports (GOYS) (10 March).
  • Botswana
    UN in Botswana in collaboration with the Government of Botswana, through the Women’s Affairs Department, will commemorate IWD (7 March). 
  • Burundi
    • Media Workshop on the theme, " Partnership of men and women to end violence against women" to promote International Women’s Day, organized by UNIC Bujumbura in cooperation with the Ministry of Human Rights and Gender, BINUB and UNFPA (2 March 2009)
    • Ceremonies, including a march to commemorate International Day of Women under the theme, "Men and Women unite to end violence on women" co-organized by the Government, UNIFEM, UNIC, UNFPA, BINUB and NGOs (Muramvya province, 8 March).
  •   Cameroon
    • Media Outreach event UN Press Club on IWD Theme “Women and Men : Unite to end Violence Against Women” organized by UNCG  with Government, UNIC as lead agency (Yaounde, 5 March)
    • NGO Outreach Event organized by UNIC with presentation by UNIFEM Representative and Chairperson of National Commission on Human Rights and Freedom (Yaounde, 6 March)
    • Participation of UNCT representatives and staff at official march with estimated 40,000 people from women’s and men’s groups for International Women’s Day (Yaounde, 8 March).
  • Gabon:
    Media outreach event and launch on the SG’s Campaign to End Violence Against Women (Libreville, 12 March). 
  • Ghana 
    • A colloquium by UN Country Team to mark International Women's Day (Accra, 10  March)
    • Joint forum organized by the UN Country Team with the Ministry of Women &  Children's Affairs for women’s and men’s groups to discuss issues related to ending violence against women (Accra, 13 March).
  • Kazakhstan
    A forum will be organized to commemorate International Women’s Day.  (Astana, 5 March). 
  • Lesotho
    UNIC Maseru plans to observe International Women's Day with an event led by the Department of Gender. (Leribe, 13 March). 
  • Mexico
    UNIC to host with the UNCT Inter-Agency Gender Group the Press Conference on the International Women’s Day (Mexico City, 5 March),
  • Namibia
    International Women’s Day in Namibia will be observed under the theme ‘sharing responsibilities.’ UNIC Windhoek together with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare will concentrate on assisting women from all walks of life, especially those from rural areas to showcase their product on an open market on Saturday, 7 March 2009. The Open Market day initiative will emphasize women’s recognition as primary producer of food, the pillar of her family and a champion of sustainable development. And most importantly the organizers hope to increase business of rural women entrepreneurs (7 March).
  • Peru
    Round Table: "Men and Women United to Stop Violence against Women", activity
    organized by UNIC and NGO Warmi Qusi on the occasion of the International
    Women's Day (Lima, 9 March).
  • Qatar
    In Qatar, UNIC Manama arranged for NGOs and UN Special Rapporteur for Disabled Persons, Shaikha Hessa Althani, to mark International Women’s Day by launching a campaign with a focus on Ending Violence Against Disabled Women (8 March).
  • Republic of the Congo
    • UNIC to hold educational outreach activities in seven public high schools  (Brazzaville, 2-5 March)
    • UNIC in partnership with UNFPA and UNDP to organize a mobile exhibition, a conference discussion with young people, a special TV programme on the occasion of the International Women's Day (8-31 March).
  •   Russian Federation
    Observance of the International Women’s Day under the motto “Men and Women – UNited to End Violence against Women”: special event of the UNCT-Russian for local partners from civil society, government institutions and media (UNIC Moscow, 5 March); reception dedicated to the International Women’s Day, in the context of the Secretary-General’s campaign “UNite to End Violence against Women”, intended for representative of Moscow city government agencies and NGOs (UNIC Moscow, 12 March).
  • Sri Lanka
    The National Information Officer will make a presentation highlighting UN perception
    on the issue, Violence against Women,  and remedies at a Seminar on International Women’s  Day 2009, (Town Hall, Matara, 161 k.m. away from Colombo, 08 March).
  • Sudan
    An event titled “Women and Creativity: For the Welfare of the Nation” will be sponsored by Ahfad University for Women and the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) to commemorate International Women’s Day (6 March).
  • Thailand
    UNIS Bangkok, in collaboration with the inter-agency United Nations Working Group on Women, will organize the observance of the International Women's Day in Bangkok (9 March).
