Marking International Day, top UN officials urge greater investments in women

8 March  2008 - Top United Nations officials commemorated this year's International Women's Day by calling on countries to invest more in women and girls, warning that failing to do so will undermine efforts to achieve global development targets.

7 March  2008 - Almost every country in the world still has laws that discriminate against women, and promises to remedy this have not been kept, the top United Nations human rights official said today, speaking on the eve of International Women's Day.

6 March  2008 - Greater investment in women and girls will help further economic growth and advance development, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has told today's commemoration at United Nations Headquarters of International Women's Day.





UN must take lead in eradicating violence against women, Ban Ki-moon says

8 March  2007 - Impunity for violence against women – for too long tolerated under the cover of cultural practices and silently condoned by Governments – must end, and the United Nations must spearhead the effort to eliminate the pandemic, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said this morning at an event commemorating International Women’s Day.





UN marks International Women’s Day with spotlight on curbing gender-based violence

8 March  2007 - From the violence-scarred cities of Afghanistan to the rape-wracked lands of Darfur, from the teeming Palestinian refugee camps of Gaza to the lofty halls of its Headquarters in New York, the United Nations system today marked International Women’s Day with the focus on ending impunity for violence against women and girls.
