Antero Lopes
Deputy Police Advisor, Department of Peacekeeping Operations

Antero LopesMr. Lopes (left) has over 20 years of leadership experience in law enforcement and policy, at both national and international levels. He joined the UN in 1993 where he served in the Balkans as: Regional Commander, HQ Operations Officer, Police HQ Human Rights Officer, and Chief of Strategic Information and Police Spokesperson. In addition, he has assisted the Electoral process in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and served at the UN mission in Timor-Leste as UN Deputy Commissioner for National Police Development and later as Police Commissioner, commanding both UNMIT police and the local police (PNTL). In DPKO, Mr. Lopes has served in policy and management functions, as well as being the Deputy Police Adviser and Acting Police Adviser. In his work with DPKO, he has introduced gender balance and mainstreaming issues within all areas of police business. In addition to his experience with the United Nations, Mr. Lopez has participated in the Council of Europe's and European Union's Programs to assist reform of Police and Criminal Justice, as well as participating in bi-lateral projects to enhance law enforcement capabilities in African countries.

Mr. Lopes holds academic titles at Masters and Doctorate’s levels in the areas of Police Sciences (composite of Law, Management and Social Sciences), International Relations and Political Studies, Security and Strategic Studies from Lisbon University and European Studies from the College of Europe, as well as executive studies on Senior Management in Government from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
