Theme: "The Media and Armed Conflict"

An observance of World Press Freedom Day, organized by the Department of Public Information, will be held on Friday, 2 May 2003, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Conference Room 2, featuring a panel discussion entitled “The Media and Armed Conflict”. The observance will feature opening remarks by:
Kofi Annan, Secretary-General,
Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairman of the Committee on Information,
Abdul Waheed Khan, Assistant Director-General for Information and Communication (UNESCO),
Tony Jenkins, President of United Nations Correspondents Association,

followed by screening of a video “Media and War Coverage” presented by Mr. Robert Batscha, President of the Museum of Television and Radio.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Mr. Shashi Tharoor, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information (DPI), and will feature:
Joy DiBenedetto, CNN,
Bernard Estrade, AFP,
Abderrahim Foukara, Al-Jazeera,
Khalid Hasan, Daily Times, Lahore, and
Tony Jenkins, Expresso, Portugal.

The Department of Public Information and the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) will observe the World Press Freedom Day on Thursday, 1 May 2003 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Columbia University, School of International and Public Affairs, 420 West 118th Street, Dag Hammarskjöld Lounge, 6th Floor. The theme will be "Freedom of Expression in Cyberspace".
