Across Timor-Leste, youth, local authorities, students, and other community members participated in activities and celebrations on the International Day of Peace. These activities ranged from roundtable discussions, a public speaking contest on the theme of peace, marches, football matches and movie screenings.

In Dili, the nation’s capital, the UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Eric Tan, told a discussion at the University of Timor-Leste that: “Peace is more than the absence of war. Peace is about creating a better, secure and sustainable tomorrow for every citizen in the world.”

The DSRSG reminded the audience that while “today, most Timorese people live in peace” they must continue working together and have respect and tolerance for different voices to achieve sustainable peace and stability.
