“Message of Peace” for the observance of
the International Day of Peace, 2005
In
1971, former Beatle John Lennon wrote and recorded a hymn
for peace - "Imagine" - which has become an anthem
for the long march to establishing a peaceful, safe planet.
Yet, today, 24 years later, the peace Lennon called out
for remains imaginary at best.
The events of the past year - war, terrorism, military expenditures,
the deep divisions among nations and human beings throughout
the world - serve to make this year's International Peace
Day more critical than ever.
I urge you to listen to Lennon's "Imagine" again,
and join with the United Nations, during its 60th anniversary
year, in celebrating the International Day of Peace on September
21st.
Michael Douglas, United Nations
Messenger of Peace
"Let humankind join the United Nations for just
one day and imagine peace rather than war and violence.
Let all citizens of the planet participate in celebrating
peace on September 21."

“Message of Peace” for the observance of
the International Day of Peace, 2005
(English version)
"We should not consider peace as utopia but we should rather
regard it as an indispensable condition of life, as much
as food and water, as the air we breathe.
Peace is a RIGHT and a DUTY at the same time. It is not
a heavy burden to deliver to rulers, to the mighty. It is
a duty that everyone is called upon to perform in daily
life.
Peace is not something abstract; it is tangible and concrete
and has different meanings. Peace means RESPECT for our
fellow human being and for the environment. It means TOLERANCE
for those who are different from us; it means SHARING material
goods as well as time and knowledge; it is tantamount to
PATIENCE and COMPASSION.
Peace is not supposed to start far
away but in our society, in our homes and, most of all,
in our hearts."
Luciano Pavarotti, United Nations

of Peace
"Sport plays an important part in my life -- and in the lives
of millions of people of all ages and nationalities. Sport
helps us lead fuller, healthier, more peaceful lives. Peace
can help us pursue our dreams, enjoy our families and improve
our communities. Join me this year in observing the International
Day of Peace."

"Message of Peace" for the observance of the International Day of Peace
"The
twenty-first century began under horrible auspices -- terrorism,
war, hunger, humiliation. We must change the course. We
must ensure that: Peace is an idea; Peace is a goal; Peace
is a religion -- and that we are all part of it, we are
all responsible for it."
Dr. Elie Wiesel, United Nations Messenger of Peace
