UNHQ, New York

The key commemorative activity taking place at UN Headquarters will be an informal plenary meeting of the General Assembly on 2 October from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. where the Secretary-General is expected to make a statement. A briefing for non-governmental organizations will also be conducted by the Department of Public Information on 11 October.

Bangkok, Thailand

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, in cooperation with the Government of India, will be organizing the observance of the first International Day of Non-Violence on 2 October 2007 at the UN Conference Centre, Bangkok. At this special event, India’s Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Development of North Eastern Region will unveil a bust of Mahatma Gandhi, a gift from India to UNESCAP.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

UNIC-Buenos Aires is organizing, on 2 October 2007, a ceremony marking the first International Day of Non-Violence, with the Argentina Chapter of the NGO World Without War Foundation.

Dhaka, Bangladesh

UNIC-Dhaka will be marking the International Day of Non-violence with several events:

a lecture by a UNIC official at a seminar on the International Day of Non-violence, organized by Center for Peace Initiave, in Dhaka, on 2 October 2007;
the participation of a UNIC panelist in a seminar on the International Day of Non-violence, organized by the UN Association of Bangladesh, in Dhaka, on 2 October 2007;
a discussion event on 3 October 2007.

New Delhi, India

To mark 2 October, International Day of Non-Violence, the United Nations Information Centre at New Delhi will present an exhibition of photographs highlighting the issue of Small Arms. The sensitive exhibit Crush the Illicit Trade in Small Arms calls attention to the dangers posed by the illicit trade of small arms, including its humanitarian and social impact, and informs the public about key efforts of the United Nations, its agencies and programmes to address the problem of illegal small arms. The exhibit will be on display, 1-7 October, at the India International Centre.

UNIC will participate in the observance of 2 October, traditionally observed in India as the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, but from this year onwards, additionally marked as International Day for Non-Violence. At the memorial which marks the spot where Mahatma Gandhi fell to an assassin’s bullet, UNIC Director will deliver the message of the Secretary-General at a multi-faith prayer meeting organized by Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti.

Prague, Czech Republic

UNIC-Prague and NGO Humanistic Movement will organize a press conference, a student conference and a street awareness-raising campaign for the International Day of Non-Violence on 2 October 2007.

Vienna, Austria

The International Day of Non-Violence was marked in Vienna by a number of NGOs and members of the Indian community, with several organizations teaming up under the "Europe for Peace" campaign. The main event in the city centre included a ceremony of lights where participants held torches and stood in the formation of the peace-sign. The event was attended by representatives of UNIS-Vienna, who distributed the message of the Secretary-General.
