ORBIT: NASA ASTRONAUTS PHOTOGRAPH THE EARTH

An exhibition of stunning photographs of the planet earth taken by orbiting NASA astronauts is on display at the Public Lobby of the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 1 through 29 March 2000.

Produced by the United States National Geographic Society and sponsored by the United Nations Department of Public Information, the Orbit exhibition at the UN presents an historic collection of a wide range of breathtaking photographs depicting amazing views of our blue planet.

The images depict views of the Earth from Outer Space, including Russia’s Lake Baikal; the Aurora of Southern Australia, dune waves of the Sahara Desert, and the burning of the Amazon rainforests alongside many other fascinating stratospheric views around the world.

These incredible images illustrate with dramatic evidence both the man-made and natural forces changing the planet mankind inhabits. They also vividly demonstrate that the national boundary lines of the 188 UN Member States are invisible when viewed from Outer Space, and serve as a reminder of the imperative nature essentiality of Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, a goal the World Organisation is working towards decades.

Jay Apt, Michael Helfert and Justin Wilkinson are the three NASA astronauts whose photographs are featured at the UN exhibit.

Access: Free.
Open:
Monday through Sunday, 9am-5pm
Address
: United Nations Public Entrance, 46th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan.
