Special Exhibition to Mark the 10th Anniversary of the Cairo Population Conference

Logo UNFPAUNITED NATIONS, New York, 6 October 2004 – In connection with the United Nations General Assembly’s commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo (ICPD), UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is presenting a photographic exhibition by internationally renowned artist, Fazal Sheikh, who was named by The New York Times as one of the artists most likely to change the culture for the next thirty years.

The exhibition will feature Sheikh’s two series, A Camel for the Son: Somalia, about a civil war that has claimed some 350,000 lives, and The Victor Weeps: Afghanistan.

The exhibition will also include a video presentation of 30-second TV spots produced by students of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena to raise awareness of the ICPD goals.

UNFPA has a unique role in assisting refugees and people around the world exposed to sexual violence and denial of basic rights and of access to health care. UNFPA moves quickly when emergency strikes to protect the reproductive health and well-being of women and adolescents.

“When I first encountered the work of Fazal Sheikh,” said Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, UNFPA’s Executive Director, “I was struck by the extraordinary power of his art to put viewers in a direct, emotionally nuanced dialogue with people and situations that virtually define UNFPA’s mission.”
