United Nations Under-Secretary-General

Pino Arlacchi, a national of Italy, was appointed on 1 September 1997 as Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna and Executive Director of the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (ODCCP), with the rank of Under-Secretary-General.

    Mr. Arlacchi was a member of the Italian Senate from 1995 to 1996 and a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1994 to 1995. During this period he was elected and served as Vice-President of Italy's Parliamentary Commission on Organized Crime. In 1994, he became a full Professor of Sociology at the University of Sassari, Italy. From 1988 to 1994 he served as Associate Professor of Applied Sociology at the University of Florence, Italy, and in 1987 was visiting Professor at Columbia University, U.S.A. From 1982 to 1985, he was Associate Professor at the University of Calabria.

    In the early 1990s, Mr. Arlacchi, in his capacity as Senior Adviser to Italy's Ministry of Interior, established the "Direzione Investigativa Anti-Mafia (DIA)", a law-enforcement agency entrusted with fighting organized crime. In 1989, he became President of the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime, and from 1984 to 1986 he served as an adviser to the Italian Anti-mafia Parliamentary Committee.

    In recognition of his commitment to the fight against the Mafia, Mr. Arlacchi was nominated in 1992 as Honorary President of the "Giovanni Falcone" Foundation, named after the Italian prosecutor, and close friend, who was assassinated by the Mafia in 1992.
 
    Within the United Nations system, Mr. Arlacchi has long served as an adviser to United Nations units dealing with drug abuse and narcotics control. He has also contributed to studies and participated in numerous conferences conducted by the United Nations and other international organizations in the field of drug control and crime prevention.

    Mr. Arlacchi is the author of several books and publications on the Mafia and transnational organized crime, which have been translated into many languages. He has received a number of national and international awards and decorations, in recognition of his outstanding contribution towards a better understanding of the Mafia.

Born in Gioia Tauro, Italy, on 21 February 1951, Mr. Arlacchi lives and works in Vienna. He is married and has two children.
