Intergovernmental
Processes
The
Government of Germany hosted the International
Conference on Freshwater in Bonn from
3
– 7 December 2001 in close co-operation with the United Nations. The
Conference
was
intended to contribute to the solution to global freshwater problems and to
support
preparations
for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in
2002.
A
key question for the Conference was what needs to be done to reach the
development
target
set by the United Nations Millennium Assembly: "To halve, by 2015, the
proportion of
people
unable to reach or to afford safe drinking water."
The
Conference developed Recommendations
for Action in three important cross-sectoral
areas:
-
governance, management and partnerships;
-
mobilizing financial resources;
-
capacity building
and sharing knowledge;
as
well as the "
Bonn Keys" , five concise policy recommendations, which point to the main areas of necessary political
commitment.
