ECOSOC Decision on NGOs and other Major Groups accredited to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD)

The Economic and Social Council with decision E/2004/212 of 6 February 2004, deliberated  on the status of non-governmental organizations and other major groups accredited to the World Summit on Sustainable Development. (Note that oral decision on the participation of the NGO and other major groups to participate in the 12th and 13th sessions of the CSD is now Council decision 2004/216 of 13 February 2004).

Long term implications for representatives of a WSSD-accredited organization
  1.  WSSD-accredited NGOs and other major groups active in the post-WSSD implementation cycle are advised to apply immediately for consultative status with the Economic and Social Council, if they intend to stay engaged in the future implementation cycles of the CSD.

  2. The NGO Committee, the intergovernmental body that reviews and eventually grants status to applying NGOs, meets twice a year and deals with a large number of applications: early submission is strongly recommended, as the process may take one to two years. Applications received before 1 June 2007 will be reviewed in 2008 by the NGO Committee and submitted to ECOSOC for final approval.

  3.  Information on how to apply for ECOSOC status, including the application form, can be found on the  NGO Section website.

For easy reference you can access the consolidated list of WSSD accredited NGOs by clicking  here;  while a more complete list (including contact information and descriptive summary) of the same organisations can be also by accessing the WSSD website .
