The multi-stakeholder dialogue segment on energy and transport, held
from 16-18 April 2001, involved representatives of business and industry,
workers and trade unions, local authorities, scientific and technological
communities, and non-governmental organizations.
The segment focused on four themes:
-
Achieving equitable access to sustainable energy
-
Sustainable choices for producing, distributing and
consuming energy
-
Public-private partnerships to achieve sustainable
energy for transport
-
Sustainable transport planning- choices and
models for human settlements designs and vehicle
alternatives.
Lead organizations, invited
by the Commission on Sustainable Development secretariat, consulted with
their constituencies to prepare "dialogue starter" papers and to organize
the participation of their delegations in the dialogue segment. The lead
organizations for the Energy and Transport Dialogue Segment included the
International Chamber of Commerce, World Business Council for Sustainable
Development and World Energy Council for business and industry; International
Union for Science and the World Conservation Society (IUCN) for scientific and
technological communities; International Confederation
of Free Trade Unions/Trade Union Advisory Committee to
the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and
Development (OECD) for workers and trade unions;
International Council for Local Environmental
Initiatives for local authorities; and, NGO Caucus for
Climate Change and Energy, and the NGO Caucus for
Sustainable Transport for non-governmental
organizations.
The
first hour of each session started with short presentations by the stakeholder
groups followed by reactions by two governments, with the remainder of
the time allocated for the interactive dialogue. This dialogue informed
the subsequent discussions of the CSD both in the high-level segment and
in the remainder of the Commission's work on sustainable energy and transport.
