The Commission on Sustainable Development, at its 12th session in April 2004 (CSD-12), will undertake an evaluation of overall progress in implementing Agenda 21, the Programme for Further Implementation of Agenda 21 and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, as well as a more specific review of progress achieved in the implementation of the thematic clusters of Water, Sanitation, and Human Settlements that will provide an analytical basis for the Commission's review. 

The CSD Secretariat encourages and welcomes inputs from major groups organizations that will contribute to the CSD-12 evaluation and review process. Information submitted by major groups will be collected, analysed and used as inputs for official published reports, including:

1. The Secretary-General's State of Implementation reports, one reflecting overall progress in the implementation of Agenda 21, the Programme for Further Implementation of Agenda 21 and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation; and others that will provide a detailed review of progress of implementation at all levels in thematic areas of water, sanitation and human settlements and reflect new challenges and opportunities related to the implementation of Agenda 21. The deadline for submission of information to be included in this report is 31st October 2003.

2. A Background Paper prepared by the CSD Secretariat summarizing views from major groups on overall progress on all areas as well as thematic areas of water, sanitation, and human settlements. The deadline for submission of information to be included in this report is 15th February 2004.

Data and information should be provided in the form of factual evidence to allow a fact-supported analysis of progress achieved in the implementation of the commitments, goals and targets agreed upon in Agenda 21, the Plan for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21 and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation related to the thematic areas of water, sanitation and human settlements.
