CSD-5 served as preparatory session for
the 1997 General Assembly 19th Special Session to
review the Implementation of Agenda 21 (Earth
Summit + 5). The session adopted the
Programme
for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21 prepared by the Commission
on Sustainable Development. It also adopted the
programme of work
of the Commission for 1998-2002.
As part of its stocktaking at Earth Summit+5 in 1997, the United Nations
General Assembly directed the CSD to strengthen its high-level policy
debate through more extensive interaction with representatives of major
groups. In response the CSD has integrated two-day multistakeholder
dialogue segments into its annual sessions (see
CSD-6 onwards).
