Fifteenth Session

The fifteenth session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-15) met at UN Headquarters in New York from 30 April - 11 May 2007.

Fourteenth Session

The fourteenth session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-14) met at UN Headquarters in New York from 1-12 May 2006.

Thirteenth Session

The thirteenth session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-12) met at UN Headquarters in New York from 11-22 April 2005.

Twelfth Session

The twelfth session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-12) met at UN Headquarters in New York from 14-30 April 2004. For the first three days (14-16 April), CSD-12 served as a preparatory meeting for the ten-year review of the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The following two weeks (19-30 April) served as the CSD-12 Review Session.

Eleventh Session

The eleventh session of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-11), the first CSD meeting since the World Summit on Sustainable Development, was held in New York from 28 April to 9 May 2003.

Tenth Session

The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development met for its tenth session (CSD-10), which served as the first Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, from 30 April - 2 May 2001 at the UN Headquarters in New York. The same Bureau continued its work throughout the preparatory process leading to the World Summit on Sustainable Development including three additional PrepCom meetings. 
The fifty-three members of the Commission in 2001-2002 included: African States: 13 Asian States: 11, Eastern European States: 6, Latin American and Caribbean States: 10, Western European and Other States: 13.

The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development met for its seventh session (CSD-7) at UN Headquarters in New York from 19 April to 30 April 1999. Sixth Session

The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development met for its sixth session (CSD-6) at UN Headquarters in New York from 20 April to 1 May 1998. The fifty-three members of the Commission in 1998 included: 

African States: Algeria, Benin, Central African Republic, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Gabon, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Niger, Sudan, Zimbabwe; 

Asian States: China, the Democratic Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Japan, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand; 

Eastern Europe States: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russian Federation, and Slovakia;

Latin American and Caribbean States: Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela;

The CSD elected the following officers to its Bureau by acclamation: Chair, Mr. Cielito Habito (Philippines); Vice-Chair, Mr. Rogatien Biaou (Benin); Ms. Marta Inés Galindo (Colombia), Mr. Michael Odevall (Sweden), and Mr. Miloslav Hettes (Slovakia). Ms. Marta Inés Galindo was also elected to serve as Rapporteur.

Fifth Session

The session was opened by the temporary Chair, Mr. Rumen Gechev (Bulgaria). Elected by acclamation to the Bureau for the fifth session were Dr. Mostafa Tolba (Egypt), as Chair; and, as Vice-Chairs, Ambassador Bagher Asadi (Islamic Republic of Iran); Ambassador John Ashe (Antigua and Barbuda); Ms. Monika Linn-Locher (Switzerland); and Mr. Czeslaw Wieckowski (Poland). Mr. Wieckowski also served as Rapporteur. Dr. Tolba invited the co-chairs of the Intersessional Meeting, Ambassador Amorin and Mr. Osborn, to continue to assist the Bureau as friends of the Chair.

Special Session of the GA

The nineteenth Special Session of the General Assembly to review the first five years of progress in implementing Agenda 21 was convened on 23 June. Ambassador Razali Ismail of Malaysia, the President of the General Assembly at its fifty-second session, was elected to Chair.

One hundred eighty-three of the one hundred eighty-five Member States participated in the nineteenth special session. This included over fifty heads of State and government, eighty ministers and other senior government officials.

The Special Session appointed a Committee of the Whole under the Chair of Dr. Tolba. Vice-chairs were Ambassador Bagher Asadi (Islamic Republic of Iran), Ambassador John Ashe (Antigua and Barbuda), Ms. Idun Eideheim (Norway), and Mr. Czeslaw Wieckowski (Poland). Ms. Linn-Locher, along with Ambassador Amorin and Mr. Osborn, continued to assist the Bureau as friends of the Chair.

Fourth Session

In 1996, the following countries were Members of CSD: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belgium, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burundi, Canada, Central African Republic, China, Colombia, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Gabon, Germany, Ghana, Guinea, Guyana, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Mozambique, Netherlands, Niger, Pakistan, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Slovakia, Spain, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United Republic of Tanzania, United States of America, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.

At the first and fourth meetings, on 18 and 19 April, the Commission elected, by acclamation, Mr. Rumen Gechev (Bulgaria), as Chair, and, as Vice-Chair, Mr. Enrique Provencio (Mexico), Mr. Paul de Jongh (Netherlands), Mr. Adam Vai Delaney (Papua New Guinea), and Mr. Daudi Ngelautwa Mwakawago (United Republic of Tanzania). Mr. Adam Via Delaney was also elected to serve as Rapporteur.

Third Session

In 1995 the following countries were Members of CSD: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Canada, Chile, China, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Gabon, Germany, Ghana, Guinea, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Italy. Japan, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Netherlands, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Senegal, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United Republic of Tanzania, United States of America, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

The session was opened by the retiring Chair of the second session, His Excellency, Mr. Klaus Topfer (Germany), and a new Bureau was elected by acclamation, as follows: Chair, Mr. Henrique Brandao Cavalcanti (Brazil); Vice-Chair: Mr. Henry Aryamanya-Mugisha (Uganda); Mr. Magnus Johannesson (Iceland); Mr. Takao Shibata (Japan); and Mr. Jordan Uzunov (Bulgaria), who also served as Rapporteur

Second Session

The fifty-three members of the CSD in 1994 were Algeria, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Austria, Barbados, Belarus, Belgium, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Gabon, Germany, Guinea, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United Republic of Tanzania, United States of America, Uruguay, Vanuatu and Venezuela.

The second session was opened by the retiring Chairman, Mr. Razali Ismail, Ambassador of Malaysia, who presided over the election of a new Bureau. The members elected Germany's Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Mr. Klaus Topfer, as its new Chairman. Other members of the Bureau included Ms. Savitri Kunadi (India); Ambassador Tunguru Huaraka (Namibia); Dr. Maciej Nowicki (Poland); and Minister Sergio Florencio (Brazil).
