Workshop on Data Collection and Disaggregation for Indigenous Peoples
New York, 10-21 May 2004
Data collection was identified as an urgent priority by the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at all its sessions. A “Workshop on Data Collection and Disaggregation for Indigenous Peoples” was held in New York, in January 2004 in accordance with Economic and Social Council decision 2003/300. It was attended by 36 experts from the United Nations system and other intergovernmental organizations, Governments, indigenous organizations and academia.
The Workshop discussed a number of case studies, took account of the diversity of national experience with surveys, censuses and other data and information collection systems as applied to indigenous peoples, and highlighted the urgent need for disaggregated data on indigenous peoples for developing and streamlining the national and international policies and guidelines. The workshop also made recommendations with the purpose of promoting better data collection and disaggregation concerning indigenous peoples
