Indicators of Well-being, Poverty and Sustainability

The situation of indigenous peoples is often not reflected in statistics or remains hidden in national averages. For this reason, the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues has identified inadequate data collection and the failure to disaggregate data concerning indigenous peoples as a methodological challenge.

At its sessions the Forum has adopted a number of recommendations to address these challenges. In response to these recommendations, workshops have been held in various regions addressing these issues and providing anaylysis which will contribute to the development of indicators that adequately reflect the well-being of indigenous peoples.

Data collection and disaggregation could help to detect discrimination,
inequality and exclusion of indigenous peoples, both individually and as a group,
leading to more accurate assessments about the effectiveness of development
programmes on the quality of life of indigenous peoples.
