Development not a privilege but a right for all
Addressing the largest bloc of developing countries at the United Nations, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed that development should not be "a privilege of the few, but a right for all." Global solidarity and the least developed countries, March 08
The level of the world’s income has grown impressively since the start of the new Millennium, from $31.8 trillion in 2000 to $48.2 trillion in 2006, at annual rates of above four percent on average, with some of the emerging economies such as China and India attaining growth rates between eight and nine percent. World Economic and Social Survey 2008, July 08
According to the 2008 World Economic and Social Survey, economic insecurity arises from the exposure of individuals, communities and countries to adverse events, and from their inability to cope with and recover from the downside losses. The risk and threats vary from community to community; in advanced countries, they have been associated with a significant rise in inequality, a hollowing out of middle-class lifestyles and reduced welfare protection. Elsewhere, economic shocks and premature deindustrialization have raised fears of an insufficiency of the formal sector jobs needed to accommodate an expanding urban population.

Towards Full and Decent Employment, July 08
While the international community has made a commitment to achieving full employment, this goal seems ever more distant in view of recent trends such as growing unemployment, underemployment and the phenomenon of “jobless growth”. This book also breaks new ground in seeking fresh solutions. Employment creation is the key link in ensuring that economic growth contributes to poverty reduction, with management of technological change playing a crucial role.

Developing countries take a hit, November 2008
The global financial crisis has markedly intensified. Equity prices have fallen sharply worldwide, a number of major financial institutions have collapsed, while liquidity has evaporated in financial markets. These financial strains are exerting tremendous downward pressure on economic activity worldwide. A large number of developed economies are already in recession, and growth in many developing countries is decelerating significantly.
