The United Nations Division for Social Policy and Development (UNDSPD) is part of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). It seeks to strengthen international cooperation for social development with particular attention to poverty eradication, employment generation and social integration, especially with due regard to issues relating to older persons, persons with disabilities, family, youth, persons in situations of conflict and indigenous peoples, and other vulnerable or marginalized groups (or persons) due to their economic, social (religious), or cultural backgrounds.

General Assembly 2008  
The 63rd session of the General Assembly will open on 16 September 2008 and the general debate will take place from 23 September to 1st October 2008.

End Poverty 2015  
The United Nations Secretary-General and the President of the United Nations General Assembly will convene a High-level Event on the Millennium Development Goals at UN Headquarters in New York on 25 September 2008.
The High-level Event will be a forum for world leaders to review progress, identify gaps, and commit to concrete efforts, resources and mechanisms to bridge the gaps. Click here for more information.

 
Growing Together: Youth and the Work of the United Nations  
New Publication: "Growing Together: Youth and the Work of the United Nations ". The brochure is a welcome example of how the United Nations system and the young people it serves are growing together. By taking stock of UN system activities related to youth development, the brochure provides a chance to assess how effectively the United Nations system is responding to this important development challenge, and it helps to identify any gaps that may exist in our approach.

 
Guide to the National Implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing  
New Publication: "Guide to the National Implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing". The Guide takes two broad approaches towards actualizing MIPAA: the development of effective age-specific policies that facilitate the mainstreaming of older persons’ concerns into all aspects of development and policy-making; and the application of a holistic intergenerational life-course approach that emphasizes equity and inclusiveness for all age groups.

 
United Nations General Assembly  
The 2008 Report of the Secretary-General A/63/133: Implementation of the outcome of the World Summit for Social Development and of the twenty-fourth special session of the General Assembly.

The report highlights a number of recommendations for achieving full employment and decent work for all. Click here to download the report in all 6 UN official languages and for more reports in the social policy area.
 
Youth at the United Nations  
The United Nations International Youth Day , 12 August 2008. The Theme this year is: "Youth and Climate Change: Time for Action".

The selection of this theme for IYD 2008 is in recognition of the fact that climate change has already begun to devastate communities and deepen the effects of poverty and hunger.
 
United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues  
The International Day of the World´s Indigenous People will be observed at the United Nations Headquarters on Friday 8 August 2008 in the Dag Hammarskjöld Auditorium, from 10:00 to 13:00.

It is organized by the Secretariat of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in cooperation with the NGO Committee on the International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples.
 
International Day of Cooperatives 2008  
The United Nations International Day of Cooperatives , 5 July 2008. The Theme this year is: "Confronting Climate Change through Cooperative Enterprise".

Disabilities Stamps  
On 6 June 2008, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issued six commemorative stamps on the theme “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”. Click here to download the stamps in pdf.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted on 13 December 2006 during the sixty- first session of the General Assembly, by resolution 61/106.
 
United Nations Enable  
A commemorative event for the entry into force of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol was organized by the Division for Social Policy and Development, UNDESA on 12 May 2008, New York in the General Assembly Hall at United Nations Headquarters.
