UN International Day of Cooperatives "Driving Global Recovery through Cooperatives". This year's International Day theme focuses on recovery rather than crisis. It aims to highlight the role that cooperatives have in not only promoting economic growth, but also in promoting ethical values - values which have been severely challenged during the financial and food crisis. It underlines that cooperatives can effectively contribute to global economic recovery and that they will do so in respect of the Cooperative Values and Principles which guide their operations.

International Day of Families:
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that 15 May of every year shall be observed as the International Day of Families. The theme for this year is "Mothers and Families: Challenges in a Changing World".

organized by the Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) in Bonn, Germany.

28-30 April
"Cooperatives in a world in crisis"
organized by the Division for Social Policy and Development of the United Nations Department of Economic and   Social Affairs (UNDESA) in coordination with the International   Cooperative Alliance (ICA) in New York. The EGM will discuss broadly the   role of cooperatives in a world in crisis.

14-16 April
Expert Group Meeting on "Mainstreaming Disability in Millennium Development Goals policies, processes and mechanisms: Development for All”, WHO Headquarters, Geneva.

Expert Group Meeting on "Family policy in a changing world: Promoting social protection and intergenerational solidarity" in Doha, Qatar. The Meeting is organized by the Division for Social Policy and Development of UN DESA in cooperation with the Doha International Institute for Family Studies and Development.

The First Session of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)
will take place in Conference Room AH, Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland from. CRPD is the body of independent experts which monitors implementation of the Convention by the States Parties.

20 February
The first World Day of Social Justice,
proclaimed by the UN General Assembly last November, will be observed on Friday 20 February 2009. On this occasion, the ILO will organize a panel discussion in Geneva on “The Crisis: Threat or Opportunity for Social Justice?” at ILO Geneva, Governing Body Room, from 3-5pm.

20 February
Panel discussion on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization (20 February 2009, 9 – 11:30 am, ECOSOC), organized by ILO in collaboration with DPI, Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative and NGLS, will raise awareness of the first World Day of Social Justice and provide momentum for initiatives on social justice at the national and regional level. The panel will be moderated by Eric Falt, Director, Outreach Division, DPI with a number of invited panelists from diverse disciplines.

4-13 February
47th Session of the Commission for Social Development,
United Nations Headquarters, New York. Social Integration is the priority theme for the 2009-2010 review and policy cycle, taking into account the relationship with poverty eradication and full employment and decent work for all.

10 February
Launch of the World Day of Social Justice, organized by DSPD, DESA, in cooperation with ILO and the Permanent Mission of Kyrgyzstan will take place in conjunction with the Commission for Social Development.

AARP/UN Programme on Ageing Luncheon Briefings 2009

International Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the implementation of article 42 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
, United Nations Headquarters, New York. The EGM will be attended by indigenous experts and UNPFII members as well as interested Member States, UN Agencies and Indigenous Peoples' Organizations.
