At its thirty-ninth session, the Commission for Social Development considered two topics under its agenda and multi-year programme of work, namely the priority theme “Enhancing social protection and reducing vulnerability in a globalizing world” and the sub-theme “The role of volunteerism in the promotion of social development”; and the review of relevant United Nations plans and programmes of action pertaining to the situation of social groups.

On the theme of social protection, the Commission adopted a decision in which it recognized the need for further analyses, research and sharing of views and decided to consider possible ways of further examining this issue at a future session.  Furthermore, the Commission recommended to the Economic and Social Council the adoption of a resolution on volunteering and social development.  In connection with its review of plans and programmes of action pertaining to the situation of social groups, the Commission agreed on a resolution on the preparation for and observance of the tenth anniversary of the International Year of the Family.

The Commission also recommended to the Economic and Social Council the adoption of a resolution on the multi-year programme of work of the Commission for Social Development for the period 2002-2006, built around the follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development and the 24th special session of the General Assembly, incorporating also the review of relevant United Nations plans and programmes of action pertaining to the situation of social groups.

For all resolutions and decisions adopted at the 39th session of the Commission for Social Development, please refer to the final report of the 39th session.

The Chairman of the Commission's thirty-ninth session was Faith Innerarity (Jamaica). Its four Vice-Chairmen were: Henrik Hahn (Denmark); Nicole J. Elisha (Benin); Muhammed Enayet Mowla (Bangladesh); and Anzhela Korneliouk (Belarus), who also served as Rapporteur.

In accordance with General Assembly resolution 54/262, the Commission also served as the Preparatory Committee for the 2nd World Assembly on Ageing.
