Meeting of National Focal Points on Ageing of the ECE region in Segovia, Spain, 13-15 November 2006
The meeting was organized by the Institute for Older Persons and Social Services (IMSERSO) of Spain and ECE with support from the UNFPA. The meeting discussed the implementation of the UNECE Regional Strategy (RIS) of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA), exchanged good practices, delivered to the focal points expert advice on the review and appraisal of MIPAA/RIS, and identified needs for capacity-building in the field of population ageing. Pan American Conference on Family Caregiving, Miami, USA, 29 November - 1 December 2006
The National Alliance for Caregiving (http://www.caregiving.org/) organized the conference to raise awareness of family caregiving issues in Latin America and the Caribbean. The objectives of the conference were to (a) understand the magnitude and importance of the contributions of family caregivers to society, (b) acquire tools for the development of policy, research and practice to support caregiving programs and services, (c) to develop national and international networks to advocate for the needs of caregivers, and (d) work effectively with policy makers, journalists and academic researchers to raise awareness of family caregiving issues. The UN Programme on Ageing was represented at the meeting and made a presentation on 'Family Care and the First Review and Appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing'. The presentation focused on the role that family caregivers could play during the upcoming review and appraisal of the MIPAA.
Interregional Consultative Meeting on Implementation of the Madrid Plan of Action on Ageing at National Level, Bangkok, 28 November - 1 December 2006
The first activity under the four-year General Assembly funded Development Account Project Capacity Building to integrate older persons in development goals and frameworks through implementation of MIPAA took place in Bangkok from 28 November to 1 December 2006. Participants were drawn from both Government and national NGOs in project countries: Cameroon, Grenada, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Senegal and Trinidad and Tobago. Participants jointly planned future capacity building technical assistance activities under the project and, exchanged experience and ideas on ageing policy initiatives in their countries.
