47th session of the UN Commission for Social Development
The Commission for Social Development will hold its annual session from 4-13 February 2009 in New York. Social integration will be the priority theme this year. AARP/UN Programme on Ageing Luncheon Briefings 2009
AARP, in cooperation with the United Nations Programme on Ageing, DESA, will organize a series of briefings from 3 to 4 February 2009. These events will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Older Persons. Two luncheon briefings will be convened to bring together government delegates, NGOs, foundations, and academics to discuss the priority theme social integration of the Commission for Social Development and its relation to older persons. The briefings on global ageing will be held in the United Nations Delegates Dining Room at UN Headquarters in New York and are by invitation only. The 2009 briefing series will focus on how policy can reduce inequalities, promote access to basic services, education, and health care, and increase the participation and integration of social groups including older persons. Other Side Events on Ageing and Older Persons during the Commission for Social Development
In addition to the AARP briefings, two other side events are planned with regard to the issues of demographic ageing and older persons. (1) Rights of Older Persons (9 February 2009) organized by a group of international NGOs such as, HelpAge International, International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics, International Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing, International Federation on Ageing, Age Concern England, Help the Aged, and European Older People's Platform. AARP Databases on Ageing
AgeSource Worldwide identifies several hundred clearinghouses, libraries, databases, training modules, major reports, web metasites, and other information resources in some 25 countries. AgeStats Worldwide provides access to comparative statistical data that compare the situation of older adults across countries or regions around a variety of issues areas. These databases were produced and are maintained by AARP.
