Issue 15
February 2008

The 46th session of the Commission for Social Development was concluded on 22 February 2008. The Commission debated, among other agenda items, issues pertaining to ageing and older persons and concluded the first cycle of the review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing. The representatives of all five Regional Commissions of the United Nations, including four Executive Secretaries, participated in a panel discussion on regional review and appraisal of the Madrid Plan, which took place on 8 February. Based on the findings of the review and appraisal exercise at the national, regional and global levels, a draft resolution, entitled 'First review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, 2002' was adopted. As a follow-up to the first review and appraisal, the resolution requests the UN Secretariat to prepare a strategic implementation framework, which will be submitted to the Commission during its next session in February 2009.
