(1) Report to the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly
The report of the Secretary-General to the 62nd session of the General Assembly is available on the web-site of the UN Programme on Ageing. The report highlights national efforts taken to develop or strengthen national capacity on ageing, provides information on national, regional and global activities related to the first cycle of the review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing and analyses the status of international cooperation with respect to assisting Member States in their efforts to develop their capacity to implement the Madrid Plan of Action. In its conclusion, the report offers a number of recommendations for consideration by the General Assembly.

(2) International Day of Older Persons 2007 (1 October 2007)
The theme for the 2007 annual observance of the Day will be "Addressing the challenges and opportunities of ageing". The theme coincides with the theme of the first review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing in 2006-2008. While the Day will be celebrated globally on October 1, the observance at UN headquarters will occur on October 4, 2007. (3) Seminar on the Social, Health and Economic Consequences of Population Ageing in the Context of Changing Families
The Seminar on the Social, Health and Economic Consequences of Population Ageing was held in Bangkok from 25 to 27 July 2007. It was jointly organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). As a result of the seminar recommendations for action were adopted.

(4) The Seventh European Congress of Gerontology entitled “Healthy and Active Ageing for All Europeans” was conducted in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, from 5 to 8 July 2007. The Congress was organized in the framework of the United Nations Research Agenda on Ageing for the 21st Century. (5) The Third World Ageing & Generations Congress was conducted by the World Demographic Association
from 6 to 8 September 2007 in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The aim of the World Ageing & Generations Congress is to address important topics related to demographic change and its effect on the labour market and social security, on health issues, on the development of new products and markets and on changing lifestyles in society.
