(2) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol was adopted on 13 December 2006 at United Nations Headquarters, and was opened for signature on 30 March 2007. There were 82 signatories to the Convention, 44 signatories to the Optional Protocol, and 1 ratification of the Convention as of 9 May 2007. (4) Workshop on Ageing – A Challenge and an opportunity for the countries of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia
The UNECE Population Activities Unit and the Division for Arab States, Europe, and Central Asia of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) conducted a workshop “Ageing – A Challenge and an opportunity for the countries of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia”, to develop capacities for ageing related work of governmental and UNFPA focal points in Eastern and South-eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia and to exchange experiences. The workshop was hosted by UNFPA Country Office in Moldova and took place in Chisinau from 13 to 16 March 2007. (5) UNDESA/UNFPA technical cooperation mission to Armenia
The Government of Armenia has requested the United Nations assistance in promoting the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing in the country. Following the Government of Armenia request, a joint UNDESA/UNFPA mission was fielded to Armenia on 16-20 April 2007. The mission comprised of representatives of UNDESA (UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs), which houses the UN Programme on Ageing, and the UNFPA (UN Population Fund) Country Technical Services Team (CST), Bratislava, Slovakia (http://www.unfpa.cst.sk/cst.htm).The UN team met with major stakeholders on ageing in the country and identified areas for technical assistance to Armenia in the process of implementation of the Madrid Plan of Action and the Berlin Regional Implementation Strategy.
