This Manual is an aid to demographers and population experts to apply indirect methods for estimating adult mortality.  These methods are particularly valuable in the absence of a reliable civil registration system that records deaths and the demographic characteristics of the deceased. Another rationale for indirect methods is provided by the rarity of adult deaths, relative to the size of population at risk. This publication is related to Manuals IV and X.
