INTRODUCTION
The Population Division of the United Nations Secretariat is organizing the Technical Meeting on Population Ageing and Living Arrangements of Older Persons to be held at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 8-10 February 2000. The purpose of the meeting is to bring together experts from different world regions to address the most pressing issues concerning population ageing and living arrangements of older persons and historical and cultural contexts, the social process through which living arrangements of older persons influences the demand for formal and informal support systems, and how governments respond to these perceived needs. The meeting would also improve the knowledge base, identify priorities for future research and raise the long-term visibility of ageing-related issues. Financial support for this meeting was provided by the United States National Institute on Aging.
