City University is in a unique position to provide training in
research and statistical
methods for
the social and economic sciences. The Research Units in Social
Statistics and Actuarial Science
run prominent and successful national projects. The Departments
which have come together to
offer this course have a wide range of skills and have the ability
to offer students much practical
experience and opportunities for research. The degree is an
excellent foundation for a PhD or
as
a professional qualification in its own right. The Social
Statistics and Research Unit and the
Department of Actuarial Science and Statistics have ESRC
recognition for PhD training in Social
Statistics. Joint supervision can also be arranged with the
Psychology, Sociology and Economics
divisions of the Social Sciences Department.
The course has been awarded research and priority weighting by the
Economic and Social
Research Council (ESRC).
Eligible home/EC applicants for the full-time course may apply for ESRC studentships.
MSc and Diploma programme:
The course consists of ten modules, six of which are compulsory
core modules covering
fundamental aspects of research design, quantitative and
qualitative methodology and survey
research. The remaining four modules are chosen from a
comprehensive list of options. Option
module provision is currently being reviewed to reflect new staff
interests. For timetabling
purposes options are blocked into groups of three. The modules are
offered subject to a
minimum
number of participants. Students are guided in their choice in
order to ensure a fully integrated
programme.
Each module is presented as a short course running for one day per week for five weeks, or half a day a week for ten weeks.
Students are examined on the basis of written examination papers, coursework and an individual project on which dissertation is submitted. Students not wishing to present a project, but who complete the rest of the course satisfactorily, may be awarded a Diploma.

The London School of Economics is one of the largest schools in
the University of
London. It
has had a graduate teaching program in Population Studies since the
1960s which has attracted
students from all over the world. As well as research staff, the
sub-department of Population
Studies at LSE contains five full-time members of teaching staff,
and it is possible to choose
from
several degree programmes.
There are two major MSc Programmes which each take one year,
starting at the end of
September/beginning of October. Beyond the two MSc programmes the
LSE Population Studies
sub-department offers research degrees leading to an MPhil or PhD.
It is also possible to
register
as a visiting Research Scholar for periods of several months.
The first is the new MSc in Population and Development.
This programme
is intended to
provide a broad and intellectually stimulating training in the
background, concepts and practical
issues of population and development, for graduates in any relevant
degree subject. All students
take four core half-unit courses chosen from: Population and
Development - an Analytic
Approach, Population Policies - Evolution and Impact, Population
Programmes -Design
Implementation and Evaluation, Population Trends and Processes in
the Developing World,
Basic
Population Analysis, and Methods for Population Planning. In
addition, further options to the
value of one unit are selected from a wide range of additional
courses, and a 10,000 word
dissertation on an approved topic must also be submitted.
LSE also offers several relevant undergraduate degrees. These
normally take three years
and are
available in (a) Population Studies (b) Population Studies and
Geography (c) Population
Studies
and Social Policy and (d) Population Studies and Economic and
Social
History.
Tuition fees for l995-96 are 2,430 for students from within the
European Union, and
7,7l0 for
all other students.
Five full-time teaching staff, plus several part-time teachers.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The demography programme commenced in 1969. It is the only
demography programme
in
Europe based in a School of Public Health. The courses are
administered within the Department
of Epidemiology and Population Sciences and taught by staff of the
Centre for Population
Studies
(Head: Professor John Cleland) and of the Maternal and Child
Epidemiology Unit (Head:
Professor Betty Kirkwood). The School offers a twelve-month course
leading to an MSc degree
in Medical Demography. There is a nine-month course leading to the
award of the School's
Diploma in Medical Demography. The Department also offers an MPhil
and a PhD
programme.
The programme places particular emphasis upon population issues
and policies;
demographic
techniques and research methods; and epidemiology and public
health. The MSc and Diploma
courses provide a broad introduction to population science applied
to the problems of health,
social welfare and economic development. High priority is given to
studies of social, cultural
and
economic determinants and consequences of population change, while
at the same time enabling
students to achieve technical competence in the basic techniques of
demography, statistics and
epidemiology. The programme has its own networked computing
laboratory and there is an
extensive demographic section in the main School Library. Students
may also use the library
of
the University of London. There are field survey facilities
available for PhD students.
Admission to the course is open to graduates with a
first or second-class
honours degree in science
or social science or its equivalent, to graduates of medicine of an
approved university and to
other
persons who possess a qualification acceptable to the University.
Applications are encouraged
from both developing countries and developed countries and about 10
European Union (including
UK) students and 10 overseas students enrol each year. All
teaching and assessment is in
English
and students are expected to be fluent in this language.
Arrangements can be made to take the
course on a part-time basis over two years. Applications
should normally reach the
School by 1
March preceding the beginning of the academic year for which
application is made.
Tuition costs
in 1995-1996 were 8,600 pounds sterling, excluding living expenses.
There is some
financial aid
available to both United Kingdom and overseas students in the form
of a limited number of
scholarships to assist in meeting payment of School tuition fees.
These are awarded on merit.
Overseas students are advised to seek information on financial aid
from the Ministry of
Education
in the candidate's own country or from a representative of the
British Council, from the British
Embassy, Legation or local British Consulate, or any international
organization like a United
Nations agency. The syllabus includes core units in
population studies and
demographic,
epidemiological and statistical methods and optional units chosen
from among those offered in
family planning programmes, demographic estimation, developed and
developing country
demography, epidemiology, health economics and public health.
Assessment is
based on course
work for the optional units, two three-hour written papers and a
10,000 word project report
based
on individual research.
Candidates for admission are normally required to have
obtained excellent
results in the MSc
(Medical Demography) of London University, or an equivalent
approved Masters degree. There
is no closing date for applications to admission to this programme,
which should be accompanied
by an outline of the proposed research project. The PhD normally
requires three years for its
completion. The candidate is assessed solely on his or her thesis,
although some taught course
work may be prescribed. Initial registration is normally for the
M.Phil degree. Subject to
satisfactory progress students transfer to PhD registration during
their M.Phil candidatures. Fees
in 1995-1996 were 7,900 pounds sterling. Students granted Research
Study Leave to collect data
pay a reduced fee. There is no financial aid available from
the School.
Admission to this programme is open to those fulfilling
the requirements for
the MSc programme
(see above), and to those whose previous studies or experience are,
in the opinion of the School,
a suitable preparation for the course. Diploma students follow
essentially the same
programme
as that of the first two terms of the MSc programme. Assessment is
on the basis of course work
and two three-hour examination papers taken in June. Tuition
expenses in 1995-96
were 6,700
pounds sterling. Some financial aid may be available, and
is awarded on
merit.
A short course in Reproductive Health Research, of five weeks'
duration is presented
annually.
The course is suitable for those with research interests in this
field, and for managers and others
who wish to commission or use research results. Much of the course
is devoted to the design
of
policy-orientated research, and to the methods of evaluation of the
impact of programmes.
