Population Growth in India since its Independence

  • At independence (15 August 1947), the population of India stood at approximately 345 million persons (current territory). On Independence Day 1999, India will reach 1 billion persons.

  • In 52 years, India grew from 345 million to 1 billion persons. In contrast, the population of the world stood at 345 million around 1350 and reached 1 billion around 1804 -- a period of 454 years.
