World Fertility Patterns 1997

Notes:

The present chart shows the most recent data available as of April 1997.

The total fertility rate indicates the average number of children that would be born per woman if all women lived to the end of their childbearing years and bore children according to the given age patterns of fertility.

The age patterns of fertility for subregions shown in the graphs are weighted averages (using the number of women in corresponding age groups as weights) based on the number of countries for which data are available.

Two dots (..) indicate that data are not available.

(1) The age specific fertility rate corresponds to the total fertility rate for the most recent period.

(2) Sample including settled population, which represents about 95 per cent of the population.

(3) Sample including households only of nationals in the country.

(4) The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Age-specific and total fertility rates are based on information from the data bank maintained by the Population Division of the United Nations, which are derived from various sources, such as censuses, vital statistics, registration and national sample surveys.
