The analysis is complemented by a discussion of the changing concept of development. In addition the study traces the evolution of population concepts at intergovernmental forums dealing with the environment, and describes how a focus on population and environment interactions at United Nations conferences has helped to foster a long-term perspective in development strategies.
Family-building and Family Planning Evaluation
Available in English.
Describes a methodology for measuring fertility which is based on a woman's childbearing experience as she moves through successive phases of the family-building process. The methodology may serve as a complement or alternative to the more commonly used methods that measure fertility in terms of summary indices such as the total fertility rate. Thus the methodology which is applied to 15 countries in the developing regions, is intended to serve both as a means to more refined analysis of fertility change and as a better tool for the monitoring and evaluation of family planning programmes.
Levels and Trends of Contraceptive Use as Assessed in 1994
Available in English only
Provides a comprehensive review of the most recent available data about current contraceptive use and presents updated estimates of global and regional levels of contraceptive prevalence by method; the level of use and number of contraceptive users needed to bring about projected fertility declines between 1990 and 2025; and the availability of contraceptives to national populations. It also features two new topics: contraceptive use for all women of reproductive age and a comparison of married and unmarried women's contraceptive practice; and contraceptive use as reported by men, along with a comparison of men's and women's reports.
Child Survival, Health and Family Planning Programmes and Fertility
Available in English only
Presents three case-studies which examine the impact of governmental health and family planning interventions on health practices and reproductive behaviour in households in Ecuador, Indonesia and Zimbabwe. The analysis was done at the community and individual levels. At the community level, the gross relations among village and subdistrict characteristics and the levels of fertility and mortality were measured. At the individual level, the determinants of use of contraceptives and child survival interventions were examined by the application of multiple regression analysis.
Living Arrangements of Women and Their Children in Developing Countries: A Demographic Profile
Available in English only
Presents a comprehensive overview of women and children as household members in the context of social, economic and demographic changes surrounding women. Using data from the Demographic and Health Surveys, national population and housing censuses and the World Fertility Surveys, the report elucidates commonalities and differences in the way women and children live and satisfy their basic needs in various cultures, countries and regions.
The Challenge of Urbanization: The World's Large Cities
Available in English only.
Contains profiles of 100 of the world's large cities, comprising 18 cities in Africa, 29 in Asia, 24 in Europe, 20 in Latin America and the Caribbean, 4 in Northern America and 5 in Oceania. The study concentrates on problems and special planning issues of those cities, pinpointing their demographic characteristics, economic structure, available social services and infrastructure, as well as current issues facing city planners. Population size was the only criterion for inclusion in the study, which covers a wide range of cities, both ancient and modern, in developed and developing countries, both port and landlocked and those in diverse geographical settings, as well as cities whose population growth has levelled off and those whose population is rapidly growing.
Women's Education and Fertility Behaviour: Recent Evidence from the Demographic and Health Surveys
Available in English only
Provides an updated overview of the linkages between women's education and fertility in the developing world. The study reviews recent levels and trends in women's educational attainment, and presents extensive empirical evidence on the association between female education and fertility in 26 countries where the Demographic and Health Surveys were conducted in the late 1980s. Beside describing the patterns of association, the study examines the various indirect paths through which education exerts its influence on reproductive behaviour. The report documents how female education is associated with later entry into marriage, desire for smaller families and increased awareness, acceptability and access to contraception, enhancing women's choice in the process of family formation. Duration patterns of lactation and post-partum sexual abstinence according to mother's education are also examined. A decomposition technique is used to quantify the contribution of improved female education to observed fertility trends, and multi-variate analysis is performed in order to compare the relative influence of wife's and husband's education.
Developments in Demographic Training and Research Projects: Aspects of Technical Cooperation
Available in English only
Describes the type of substantive support for population training that the Population Division of the
Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the
United Nations Secretariat provides and can provide as part of its programme of technical
cooperation in population. The other two aspects of
the technical cooperation programme in population
of the Population Division are (a) support for
national research on population dynamics; and (b)
support for national population policy programmes
and offices and the integration of population into
national development plans and programmes.
The Health Rationale for Family Planning: Timing of Births and Child Survival
Available in English only
Examines the relations between fertility and child survival in the 1980s using data from fertility surveys that cover the experience of over 280,000 births and nearly 35,000 deaths before age five in 25 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The first part of the report presents results in tabular form, exploring the major relationships between variables. The second part presents the results obtained by using multivariate analyses and a number of different models to discern the interplay of various factors associated with child mortality, including education of mother, region of residence and the timing of births.
AIDS and the Demography of Africa
Available in English only
Describes the epidemiology of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the projected demographic impact of the epidemic on particular demographic indicators for 15 sub-Saharan African countries whose adult HIV prevalence is estimated at 1 per cent or higher. The report also considers the possible social and economic impacts of HIV/AIDS for sub-Saharan Africa.
Women's Status and Fertility in Pakistan: Recent Evidence
The Fertility Transition and Women's Life Course in Mexico
Women's Education and Fertility Behaviour: A Case-study of Rural Maharashtra, India
All three reports available in English only
Three separate case-studies concerned with the interrelationships between the status of women and fertility. The purpose of this study is to try to untangle the network of relationships that link education to fertility and to examine those interactions in a specified socio-cultural setting.
Patterns of Fertility in Low-fertility Settings
Available in English only
Provides an overall assessment of fertility levels and
trends in low-fertility countries for the period
1965-1989 or to the most recent year for which
pertinent data are available. The study is both
descriptive and analytical. Reproductive behaviour
is examined in terms not only of fertility rates
(mainly period rates but of cohort rates whenever
data were available), as well as in terms of total
number of births. Various other aspects of fertility,
including population replacement, adolescent
fertility, birth order and illegitimate fertility, are also
examined. A conceptual framework intended to set
the basis for a study of the determinants of the
observed fertility decline is also briefly outlined,
with a special attention to a scenario expanding on
factors to explain fertility decline in post-fertility
transition period.
Child Mortality Since the 1960s: A Database for Developing Countries
Available in English only
Provides a review of the scope and methodology of the estimation of child mortality and brings together the available data on child mortality in the developing countries, covering a period from around 1960 to the present. The purpose is to inform policy makers, programme planners and researchers of the availability of data and to demostrate their range of variation, in order to provide a basis for assessing levels and trends and for monitoring progress towards mortality reduction.
Abortion Policies: A Global Review
Volume I: Afghanistan to France
Volume II: Gabon to Norway
Volume III: Oman to Zimbabwe
Available in English only
Examines the major dimensions of induced abortion policies on a country-by-country basis. The aim is to provide information not only on the legal and policy status of abortion but also on how abortion policies have evolved over time, how they have been interpreted and enforced and the context within which abortion generally takes place. Where possible, data on incidence of induced abortion are also included. Although information on the incidence of abortion and the setting within which abortion takes place are not the focus of the study, they are provided to enrich the policy picture. The countries are arranged in alphabetical order: volume I covers Afghanistan to France; volume II, Gabon to Norway; and volume III, Oman to Zimbabwe.
Child Mortality in Developing Countries: Socio-economic Differentials, Trends and Implications
Available in English only
Investigates trends and socio-economic differentials in childhood mortality in countries from various less developed regions: Africa (Kenya); Latin America (Costa Rica, Honduras and urban Paraguay); and Asia (Jordan and Thailand). The six country case-studies presented in the report are treated in a comparative perspective, examining the same key socio-economic factors for their effects on childhood mortality.
Measuring the Dynamics of Contraceptive Use
Available in English only
Contains the report and recommendations, as well as contributed papers of the United Nations Expert Group Meeting on Measuring the Dynamics of Contraceptive Use, held in New York from 5 to 7 December 1988. The study considers ways of obtaining more complete and representative information about the rates of contraceptive failure and discontinuation.
Patterns of First Marriage: Timing and Prevalence
Available in English only.
Describes the marriage patterns of men and women during the decades following the Second World War. More precisely, the study analyses the timing and prevalence of first marriages of both sexes during the period since the middle of the twentieth century on the basis of available censuses and surveys. It also attempts to fill a gap in nuptiality research and to present a worldwide overview of first marriage behaviour based on comparable available marriage indices. Although the study covers both sexes, particular attention is devoted to first marriage patterns of women because they are the most relevant population subgroup for the understanding of fertility and because they are also those whose age at marriage is most likely to be influenced by social change. In order to present the post-war marriage levels and trends against their proper background, the discussion is preceded by a brief overview of the marriage patterns that prevailed during the first half of the twentieth century.
The AIDS Epidemic and Its Demographic Consequences
Available in English only
Contains the proceedings and the background papers of the United Nations/World Health Organization Workshop on Modelling the Demographic Impact of the AIDS Epidemic in Pattern II Countries: Progress to Date and Policies for the Future, New York, 13-15 to December 1989.
Economic and Social Aspects of Population Ageing
Available in English only.
Describes the various aspects of population ageing and its social and economic consequences in Argentina and in the State of Kerala, India, separately. The main objectives are: (a) to illuminate the demographic processes that have brought about changes in the age structure of the population; and (b) to provide planners with a better understanding of the social and economic implications of such changes.
Population Growth and Policies in Megacities
Available in English only
Focuses on the population policies and plans of some mega-cities in developing countries that expect to have a population of at least 8 million inhabitants by the year 2000. The objective of the series is to examine the formulation, implementation and evaluation of the population policies of mega-cities from a broad perspective, emphasizing the reciprocal links between population and development in the spirit of the World Population Plan of Action.
