Introduction

The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat was established in 1946 to assist Governments and the international community in dealing with population issues. It is responsible for:
(a) monitoring world population trends and policies;
(b) undertaking global research on demographic trends and structure;
(c) analyzing the relationship between population and socio-economic development;
(d) providing substantive secretariat services to the Commission on Population and Development and other United Nations bodies on population matters;
(e) organizing and preparing technical documentation for various expert group meetings and seminars;
(f) organizing and/or providing technical documentation and substantive support for intergovernmental conferences, such as the World Population Conference held in Bucharest in 1974; the International Conference on Population held in Mexico City in 1984 and the International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo in 1994;
(g) coordinating population information activities through the global Population Information Network (POPIN), which promotes the use of the Internet to facilitate and enhance communication among the regional POPINs, specialized agencies, non-governmental organizations and the broader population community; and
(h) providing substantive support to technical cooperation projects and programmes in population.

The Population Division is concerned with the following areas:

Close collaboration is maintained with other units of the Secretariat, including the population units of the regional commissions, and with specialized agencies, funds and programmes, in particular United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and World Health Organization (WHO).

The work of the Division is published in a variety of formats to meet the needs of diverse audiences. These publications, used by Governments, national and international organizations, research institutions and individuals engaged in social and economic planning, research and training, and by the general public, include:

(a) Reports on world population trends and policies and on population estimates and projections;
(b) Technical manuals on methodology of demographic analysis and projections;
(c) Special studies of demographic and population policy issues;
(d) International conferences, Expert Group Meetings, Seminars and Workshops;
(e) Wall Charts;
(f) A semi-annual journal entitled Population Bulletin of the United Nations;
(g) A semi-annual Population Newsletter.
(h) Databases and software.
