It concluded that migration was a rational response on the part of individuals and families to interregional differences in opportunities. Urbanization was viewed as an intrinsic part of development and recommendations were made to increase government's capacity to manage urban development and respond to the needs of urban dwellers, especially the poor. Measures to increase rural productivity and improve the linkages between rural and urban areas were also proposed. With regard to international migration, the processes leading to increasing migration pressures were reviewed and suggestions were made on how to reduce them.

(ST/ESA/SER.R/108). 183 pp. $25.00.
Sales No. E.91.XIII.10.

Contains the report and recommendations of the Expert Group Meeting on the International Transmission of Population Policy Experience, held in New York from 27 to 30 June 1988 under the joint sponsorship of the United Nations and the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP). The Meeting was convened to survey and assess critically the existing state of activities, primarily but not exclusively conducted by international agencies that monitor population policies in individual countries and that seek to provide information on such policies in a comparative framework. Primary areas of concern included the collection of population policy data, the classification or taxonomy to be used to deal with this information, the comparative analyses of those data and the transmission of the results and conclusions of those analyses. Building on such an assessment, the Meeting developed specific recommendations directed to increasing the efficiency and timeliness with which international population policy data are collected, analysed and transmitted to interested Governments, researchers and the general public.
