The CD-ROM contains the latest as well as trend data on contraceptive
prevalence. Contraceptive prevalence is the percentage of women currently
using contraception among those of reproductive age (aged 15-49 unless
specified otherwise) who are married or in union. World Contraceptive
Use 2005 is also available as a wall
chart.
The latest contraceptive prevalence data refer to the most recent
available data as of 1 October 2005. These data are given by method
of contraception for individual countries and country aggregates,
including the world as a whole, the more and less developed regions
and the major world areas (Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and
the Caribbean, Northern America and Oceania). For individual countries,
the most recent data were collected in 1985 or later from surveys
based on nationally representative samples of women of reproductive
age. For country aggregates, the most recent data were derived by
the United Nations Population Division based on the survey data shown.
The weights used are the estimated numbers of women aged 15-49 who
were in a marital or consensual union in 2005. The number of women
of reproductive age who are married or in union was estimated based
on marital status data (United Nations Database on Marriage Patterns)
and population statistics given in World Population Prospects:
The 2004 Revision, vol. II, The Sex and Age Distribution
of the World Population (United Nations publication, Sales No.
E.05.XIII.6).
The contraceptive prevalence trends data refer to all available data
collected between 1990 and 2004 and are given for individual countries.
The trend data give the prevalence of any method of contraception
and that of any modern method of contraception.
