                     Note by the Secretariat


    In its resolution 39/2, the Commission on the Status of Women requested
the Secretary-General to inform the Fourth World Conference on Women of the
situation concerning the release of women and children who have been taken
hostage in areas of armed conflicts and to submit a report to the Commission
at its fortieth session on the implementation of the resolution. 1/  It is the
intention of the Secretary-General to request information from Member States
on this issue and to prepare a report, based on the information received, for
consideration by the Commission at its fortieth session.
