                              PLATFORM FOR ACTION

                         Note by the Secretary-General


     In connection with the discussion of chapter IV, section G, of the draft
platform for action, entitled "Women and decision-making at all levels", and
chapter V, entitled "Institutional arrangements", the Secretariat has provided
the following documents to delegations as background material for their
deliberations at the Conference:

     (a) Report of the Secretary-General on the improvement of the status of
women in the Secretariat (A/49/587 and Corr.1), which includes in
paragraphs 30 to 47 the Strategic Plan of Action for the Improvement of the
Status of Women in the Secretariat, 1995-2000;

     (b) Report of the Secretary-General on the composition of the
Secretariat (A/49/527);

     (c) Statement on the status of women, adopted by the Administrative
Committee on Coordination at its first regular session of 1995 (A/C.5/49/62);

     (d) Report of the Secretary-General on the improvement of the status of
women (E/CN.6/1995/7);

     (e) Special measures to improve the status of women in the Secretariat: 
Administrative instruction (ST/AI/382);

     (f) Promotion of equal treatment of men and women in the Secretariat and
prevention of sexual harassment:  Secretary-General's Bulletin (ST/SGB/253);

     (g) Information circular on guidelines for promoting equal treatment of
men and women in the Secretariat (ST/IC/1992/67).
