WOM/BEI/33 13 September 1995 SPOKESWOMAN'S STATEMENT CONCERNING UN SECRETARY-GENERAL AT FOURTH WORLD CONFERENCE ON WOMEN The following statement was made today by the Spokeswoman for the Fourth World Conference on Women: According to a statement issued yesterday at United Nations Headquarters in New York by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, it has been agreed to reschedule the official visit of Mr. Boutros-Ghali to China to March 1996. The Secretary-General had planned to open the Fourth World Conference on Women but was unable to do so. He has been following the Conference closely on a daily basis. The Secretary-General is encouraged by the progress that has been achieved in the negotiations on the Declaration of Beijing and the Platform for Action, and is pleased with the announcement of a wide range of specific commitments by Member States at the Conference. The Secretary-General will be sending a special message on the occasion of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action, and the closing of the Conference, which will demonstrate the firm commitment of the United Nations to realizing the call for action contained in the Declaration and Platform. The Secretary-General has already begun to take action for the follow- up of the Conference. * *** *
