The Special Representative of the Secretary-General read out the address of the Secretary-General. Election of the President [2] Her Excellency Mme CHEN Muhua, Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China, was elected, by acclamation, President of the Conference. The President addressed the Conference. Adoption of the provisional rules of procedure [3] (A/CONF.177/2, A/CONF.177/L.4) The Conference began consideration of agenda item 3. The provisional rules of procedure, as contained in document A/CONF.177/2, were adopted by the Conference. The Conference thus concluded its consideration of item 3. Adoption of the agenda and other organizational matters [4] (A/CONF.177/1, A/CONF.177/L.4) The Conference began consideration of agenda item 4. The agenda, as contained in document A/CONF.177/1, was adopted by the Conference. - 12 - Election of officers other than the President [5] The Conference began consideration of agenda item 5. The Conference endorsed the recommendations concerning the composition of the General Committee and the distribution of posts as set out in paragraph 3 of document A/CONF.177/3. The following seven States from the African Group of States were elected, by acclamation, Vice-Presidents of the Conference: Botswana, Congo, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and the Sudan. The following six States from the Asian Group of States were elected, by acclamation, Vice-Presidents of the Conference: Bangladesh, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, Pakistan, and the Syrian Arab Republic. The following three States from the Eastern European Group of States were elected, by acclamation, Vice-Presidents of the Conference: Azerbajian, Romania, and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The following five States from the Latin American and Caribbbean States were elected, by acclamation, Vice-Presidents of the Conference: Bahamas, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba and Panama. The following six States from the Western European and Other States were elected, by acclamation, Vice-Presidents of the Conference: Australia, Greece, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. His Excellency Mr. LI Zhaoxing, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, was elected, by acclamation, Vice-President ex officio of the Conference. Her Excellency Mrs. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Namibia, was elected, by acclamation, Rapporteur-General of the Conference. Her Excellency Ms. Patricia B. Licuanan, Commissioner of the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women of the Republic of the Philippines was elected, by acclamation, Chairman of the Main Committee. Organization of work, including the establishment of the Main Committee [6] (A/CONF.177/3, A/CONF.177/L.4) The Conference began consideration of item 6 of the agenda. The Conference approved the organization of work as contained in document A/CONF.177/3. The Conference endorsed the proposals contained in document A/CONF.177/3 regarding the general debate and the composition of the Bureau of the Main Committee. The Conference approved the proposed time-table of work for the Conference and the organization of meetings as contained in document A/CONF.177/3, with the proviso that the organization of work of the Main Committee would be adjusted as required. - 13 - Credentials of representatives of the Conference [7] (a) Appointment of the members of the Credentials Committee The Conference began consideration of item 7 (a) of its agenda. It was decided that the following States be appointed members of the Credentials Committee: China, Fiji, Honduras, Namibia, Portugal, the Russian Federation, Suriname, Togo and the United States of America, on the understanding that if one of those States did not participate in the Conference, it would be replaced by another State from the same regional group. Adoption of the report of the Conference [11] The Conference began consideration of item 11 of its agenda. The Conference took note of the recommendations regarding the report of the Conference contained in paragraph 19 of document A/CONF.177/3. * * * * * The Secretary-General of the Conference addressed the Conference. Her Excellency Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, Prime Minister of Pakistan, addressed the Conference. Her Excellency Mrs. Vigdis Finnbogadottir, President of the Republic of Iceland, addressed the Conference. For security reasons, belongings such as briefcases should not be left unattended at any time. All participants in the Conference are reminded that it is essential for them to wear their Conference passes at all times when they are in the Centre. Passes should be worn on the outermost garment in order for security and safety personnel to see them clearly. * * * * * Headsets for interpretation Participants are requested to leave the headsets on their tables - they should not be removed from the meeting rooms. Documents Distribution The main documents distribution counter is located on the first floor of the Beijing International Convention Centre (BICC) to the right of the main entrance. Each delegation will be assigned a pigeon-hole for official conference documentation. Documents will also be made available in all conference rooms. Delegations are requested to inform the conference officers at the counter of their requirements in terms of number of copies and languages required. The cooperation of delegations is requested in keeping their requests for copies within reasonable limits. * * * * * - 17 - Distribution of documents for information purposes Participants are reminded that the pigeon holes at the Documents Distribution Counter are for official documentation only.
