Platform for Action [9] (A/CONF.177/L.1, L.2 and L.3) - 6 - JOURNAL SUMMARY PRE-CONFERENCE CONSULTATIONS Sunday, 3 September 1995 2nd meeting Election of officers other than the President [5] The representative of Papua New Guinea, on behalf of the Asian Group of States, informed the meeting that more consultations were required to reach agreement on the candidacies for the posts of six Vice-Presidents of the Conference. The representative of Ukraine, on behalf of the Eastern European Group of States, informed the meeting that more consultations were required to reach agreement on the candidacies for the posts of three Vice- Presidents of the Conference. The representative of Barbados, on behalf of the Latin American and Caribbean Group of States, informed the meeting that Bahamas, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba and Panama were proposed for the five posts of Vice- President of the Conference from the Latin American and Caribbean Group of States. The meeting then recommended to the Conference the election, by acclamation, of the following five States from the Latin American and Caribbean Group of States for the Vice-Presidency of the Conference: Bahamas, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba and Panama. The representative of the Division for the Advancement of Women responded to a question that had been raised by the representative of Egypt during the first meeting of the pre-Conference consultations. The pre-Conference consultations agreed to transmit document A/CONF.177/L.3 entitled "Report on the informal consultations convened by the chairperson of the Commission on the Status of Women" to the Conference for its consideration. The Chairman made a statement. The Secretary-General of the Conference made a statement. The representative of Egypt raised a question to which the Secretary- General of the Conference responded. The Secretary of the Conference made a statement. The pre-Conference consultations were thus concluded. - 7 - ANNOUNCEMENTS Opening meeting of the Conference The formal opening of the Conference will take place at 3 p.m. on Monday, 4 September, in the Plenary Hall (Convention Hall No. 1, second floor) of the BICC. In order that the opening meeting of the Conference may begin punctually, participants are requested to be seated in the Plenary Hall by 2.45 p.m. In order to accommodate overflow, the opening plenary meeting on Monday afternoon will be televised in Convention Hall No. 2 (BICC, first floor). Registration The registration centre for all conference participants is located at the Tennis Hall of the Beijing Recreation Centre, 600 metres from the BICC. Until 6 September, the registration/pass office will be open for longer hours to ensure the smooth issuance of passes. * * * * * List of speakers Delegations wishing to be inscribed on the list of speakers for the general exchange of views, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, 5 September 1995, at 10.00 a.m., are kindly requested to contact the Office of the Secretary of the Conference at the Beijing International Convention Centre (Miss E. Hardebusch, Tel.: 492-7534, Room 5017). * * * * * List of participants Delegations that have not already submitted the names of their representatives participating in the Fourth World Conference on Women are kindly requested to do so as soon as possible to the Office of Protocol, Beijing International Convention Centre, Room 5008. * * * * * Security The Security and Safety Service of the Conference has requested that the participants take their personal belongings with them at the conclusion of each meeting. For security reasons, belongings such as briefcases should not be left unattended at any time. All participants in the Conference are reminded that it is essential for them to wear their Conference passes at all times when they are in the Centre. Passes should be worn on the outermost garment in order for security and safety personnel to see them clearly. * * * * * - 8 - Documents Distribution The main documents distribution counter is located on the first floor of the Beijing International Convention Centre (BICC) to the right of the main entrance. Each delegation will be assigned a pigeon-hole for official conference documentation. Documents will also be made available in all conference rooms. Delegations are requested to inform the conference officers at the counter of their requirements in terms of number of copies and languages required. The cooperation of delegations is requested in keeping their requests for copies within reasonable limits. * * * * * Distribution of documents for information purposes Participants are reminded that the pigeon holes at the Documents Distribution Counter are for official documentation only. Participants wishing to circulate documents for information purposes, for which tables are located outside the conference rooms, are requested to bring two copies of each such document to the office of Mr. William Bunch, Coordinator for Secretariat Services, at the BICC, Room 5015. Delegates wishing to distribute any paper in the conference room are requested to contact the Secretary of the meeting concerned. Delegates wishing to circulate copies of their statements to the Plenary are requested to make 400 copies available to the Conference Officer in the Plenary Hall. Delegates wishing to have their statements distributed to the Press should send 200 copies to the Press Documents Desk, located in the main Press area, for distribution to the Media. * * * * * Tree-planting Ceremony UNEP is planning a Tree-planting Ceremony in cooperation with the Chinese National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) on Thursday, 7 September 1995, from 3.30 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. at Milu Ecological Research Centre which is situated on the outskirts of Beijing, 30 kilometres from the venue of the Conference. Transport will be available at 1.45 p.m. from the Beijing International Conference Centre (BICC) to take the delegates to Milu. * * * * *
