The International Day builds on the successes of the International Year of Forests in 2011, and provides a platform to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests and of trees outside forests.
A special event in celebration of the International Day will be held at United Nations Headquarters on Friday, 20 March 2015 (10:00 to 13:00) in the Economic and Social Council Chamber. The event entitled “International Day of Forests: Create a Climate Smart Future” will focus on showcasing forest-based solutions to climate change mitigation and adaptation, and sustainable development more broadly.
