Strengthening national reporting workshops

In 2007, the adoption of the Non-legally Binding Instrument on All Types of Forests (forest instrument) by the United Nations General Assembly reinforced the global commitment to sustainable forest management (SFM) as the overarching principle for forest policy at both the national and international levels, and outlined future priorities in the form of the four Global Objectives on Forests (GOFs).

The United Nations Forum on Forests Secretariat (UNFFS) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations organize five regional capacity building workshops in Asia-Pacific, East & Southern Africa, West & Central Africa, North Africa, Mediterranean and Central Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

The two main objectives of the workshops are:
      (1) to strengthen and support the capacity of UNFF focal points and other relevant stakeholders in developing countries in reporting to the UNFF10 on the progress made in the implementation of the forest instrument at UNFF10 in April 2013; and
      (2) to streamline and simplify the reporting format facilitating voluntary national reporting to UNFF10 on the implementation of the forest instrument and a balanced reporting on its four GOFs.
The workshops focus on enhancing participants' understanding of the importance of forest instrument and the significance of its implementation at country level. They also provide an opportunity for participants to discuss the proposed monitoring architecture and provide the UNFF Secretariat with feedback on the draft template for reporting progress in implementation of the forest instrument and achievement of the global objectives on forests while making utmost effort to streamline the reporting format.
