2012- 2013 Forest Heroes Award
All over the world people are working in quiet and heroic ways to sustain, protect and manage our forests. To honour these heroes, the United Nations Forum on Forests Secretariat launched the the second International Forest Heroes Programme and Awards.
There are countless individuals around the world who dedicate their lives to sustaining forests in quietly heroic ways. The Forest Heroes Awards was launched during the International Year of Forests, 2011, to celebrate these "unsung" heroes who inspire positive change for forests. Seven heroes were honored at the closing ceremony of the International Year in February 2012.
The Forest Heroes Awards aims to recognize and honor everyday people whose efforts are innovative and inspirational. The Programme provides visibility to enable finalists and semi-finalist to promote and expand the impacts of their work as well as networking and partnerships opportunities for the Heroes to share their knowledge and experience.
How to Nominate a Forest Hero
A Forest Hero can be ANYONE - from grassroots initiatives and innovative entrepreneurs, to school teachers or children. If they have made an outstanding commitment to forests, which has effected real change, we want to know who they are!
Judging and finalists
After the contest ends on 22 February 2013, an international jury will select 15 semi-finalist and five finalists. The finalists will be awarded at the April 2013 meeting of the United Nations Forum on Forests in Istanbul, with travel support provided.
